Lebanon fighting

On May 8th 2008 Lebanon’s protracted political crisis erupted in street fighting in Beirut.  On May 6th the Lebanese government attempted to shut down the communications systems of Hezbollah, the terrorist group that operates in Lebanon.  On May 7th there was a general strike in Lebanon, led by the opposition, and clashes erupted through Beirut.  On May 8th fighting broke out all over Beirut, ending in a Hezbollah takeover of almost all of western Beirut.  Since then, fighting has spread to Tripoli and to areas around Beirut.  The latest news indicates that the Lebanese army has decided to intervene and has said that it is prepared to use force to bring peace back to the country.

Please pray for the situation in Lebanon, which has suffered so much over the past thirty years.  Pray for a solution to the political crisis in the country and for peace and reconciliation between the various factions within Lebanese society.  Please pray that those wanting to use violence to achieve their aims, particularly Hezbollah, would see the futility of armed conflict and would be moved to work for peace.
