Lessons in Shepherding

Martin Allaby, Partner in Nepal, writes:

Our daughter Elaine and her friends attend a dynamic Christian youth group on Sunday afternoons. The leaders wanted to help them understand the Bible’s teaching about the nature of our relationship with God as our shepherd. They happen to own three sheep, so they brought them along to the grounds of the school where the group meets. The teenagers split into three groups, each with the job of shepherding their sheep to the other end of a pen. They quickly discovered how recalcitrant sheep can be. In the confusion, no one except the sheep noticed that the main gate to the school was open. The sheep made a sharp exit down the road. It took the leaders a couple of minutes to get everyone organised to chase the sheep, by which time they had run onto a major highway. When the leaders arrived, the sheep were nowhere to be seen, but some local shop-keepers told them that some men who were just standing

around had quickly bundled the sheep into a taxi and sped off into Kathmandu. One of Elaine’s friends commented, ‘Now we can appreciate what a difficult task God has guiding us!’

Naturally there was great sympathy for the leaders, who had lost three valuable sheep through arranging such a creative class, and the parents started organising a collection to replace the sheep. The leaders, however, hadn’t given up hope, and spent a day fasting and praying for the return of the lost sheep. They also took the sensible step of reporting the theft to the police. A few days later the police called to say they had arrested three sheep and some men who were trying to sell them right outside a police station. We thank God for creative youth leaders, vigilant police and answered prayer.
